TERA is a classic fantasy MMO that was released with a subscription model in May 2012, turning free-to-play in Europe and North America in February 2013.

TERA was acclaimed due to its action-oriented combat, even including the option to use a console controller to get a better feel to the fights. Called True Action Combat system, this is a system that is very similar to the ones seen in action games, with the player actively engaging in combat, using attacks and spells, not just pressing a key and waiting for the cooldown. It’s a system that is often compared to the one used in the F2P MMORPGRaiderZ.

TERA (also known as The Exiled Realm of Arborea) was also praised for its highly detailed graphics and the ease of use of the auction house. Players who want to get some exclusive items and options will have to buy a membership to the TERA Club.

ArcheAge is an MMORPG developed by Korean studio XL Games and one of the most exciting games to be revealed recently. A sandbox fantasy MMORPG set in a dynamic world where players go where they want, do what they want, ArcheAge is like a dream come true for players tired of exploring restricted worlds using the same old restricted classes and skills.

Players begin their journey in one of two continents: the Nuia or the Harihara. From then on, there’s a huge world to explore, discover and marvel at, with goals so ambitious such as building your own castle and establishing your own country. You can also build your own house for personal use or to serve as a shop in the game world and not in instanced zones, as it happens with most MMORPGs. The combination of 10 ability trees and 120 classes allows players to explore the world of ArcheAge in many different ways, using specific skills to each character.

Freedom in ArcheAge goes so far as to letting players have a fully functional farm, with trees and crops planted, watered and chopped down or harvested. There are animals to use and aid you in your tasks or serve as resources. The air and sea are also there to be explored, with gliders to fly and diving equipment to explore the depths of the sea, where you can even go treasure hunting or do some underwater planting. There are several mounts and vehicles such as row boats, ships, carts, donkeys, the aforementioned gliders, even some steampunk-looking cars.

ArcheAge even goes to the point where criminal players may be taken before a jury and face jail time, where they will repay their debt by working, enjoy some soccer in prison and attempting breakout.

This is such an in-depth game, and one that lets players forge their own stories that it’s nearly impossible to describe every feature of this game. There’s an amazingly detailed character creation system, naval combat like we’ve rarely seen before – even with a Kraken joining some of the battles –, arena duels, large scale combats, sieges, and much more. ArcheAge runs on the CryEngine 3 and is extremely beautiful, making this adventure even more appealing that it sounded at first, if we can say that.

ArcheAge is a tantalizing MMORPG with so many options and appeal to all kinds of players, although it may not be aimed at the more casual crowd. With so much to see and do, this is a game that surely has its flaws and some balance issues (as well as server and optimization problems as seen in the Korean launch) but is one of the biggest titles of 2014.

PERIA CHRONICLES ONLINE

Previously known as Project NT, Peria Chronicles is ThingSoft’s attempt at a beautiful free anime MMORPG with combat from the school of Pokémon. This game looks like a cross between the best Naruto games (the stunning console Narutos, not the Ultimate Naruto or Naruto Saga free MMO games) and the Pokémon creature-tossing battles, but the developer added a few of its own ideas to the mix, creating a truly unique and vibrant MMO world.

Besides the exciting combat where players use the monsters they’ve collected against their enemies, Peria Chronicles has a massive focus on community-driven content. Perhaps not as much as EverQuest Next – which game does so far? – but it’s probably the closest thing we’ve seen so far in the MMO department. This is a sandbox MMORPG where players are able to create landscapes and buildings as they see fit and even create massive towns, a daunting task which requires a few hundred players in a single area. There are also player-created quests which may reward the user who completes it with gold, or the creator of the quest in case the player failed to complete it.

There’s also a system in place which dynamically changes the size of the cities. For example, if a city gets more and more players it will grow considerably, while a city which is becoming deserted will become smaller and smaller until it eventually disappears from the map. Combat is fairly unique, sort of a mix between hack and slash and card games, with the cards used to summon the Kirana creatures, which you can buy or capture on the field. Some Kiranas may be combined to create an even more powerful creature.

With the amazing cel-shaded anime visuals, sandbox gameplay and a major focus on user-created content, Peria Chronicles is one of the most exciting MMORPG games of the latest years.

Kingdom Under Fire 2 is the much anticipated sequel to Blueside’s Kingdom Under Fire: Circle of Doom, a game that was greeted with a mixed reception but that managed to captivate many fans thanks to its original mix of game genres. This sequel, announced in 2008 and launched during 2014 on PC and PlayStation 4 as a free-to-play MMORPG keeps the same risky gameplay mix and high fantasy style, with strong warriors and sexy female elves without much clothing.

You’ll be able to play with one of three classes: Berserker, Gunslinger and Spellsword. Berserkers are massive creatures who use their huge swords and raw power to devastate dozens of enemies in a few seconds. The Gunslinger is the human class, a balanced class which uses a long sword in one hand and a gun on the other. Spellswords are dark elf females versed in ice magic and gifted with unbelievable speed.

Kingdom Under Fire II combines exciting action with real-time strategy and RPG elements, all enrobed in MMO style gameplay. In the RPG mode you control your hero in third person view as in normal action RPG games while in RTS mode you’ll be able to command and control your troops in a birds eye view. Game modes include Raid (PvE) where 8 players or more cooperate against AI bosses and a PvP system to improve your skills and prove you’re the best warrior in the battlefield.

Kingdom Under Fire 2 will be as much a love it or hate it game as the previous chapter, but it’s hard to resist the massive battles, the countless number of characters onscreen and the impressive, sometimes colossal bosses.

Blade and Soul is NCsoft’s tribute to the amazing martial arts genre, offering exciting action combat that is admittedly inspired by films such as House of Flying Daggers and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. This is a game that features a beautiful world to explore and plenty of amazing cutscenes and impressive bosses to fight. Special moves like wall running are also part of the deal. The art in the game was created by Hyung-Tae Kim, a renowned Korean artist famous for his work in manga and videogames such as the Magna Carta. His visual style mixes the characteristic anime visuals with a sometimes mature flavor, assuring that the Blade and Soul world is at the same time diverse and harmonized.

Blade and Soul features six classes: a stealthy Assassin, the lethal Blademaster, the axe-wielding Destroyer, the flexible Force Master, the almighty Kung Fu Master, and the mysterious Summoner. The game offers the usual PvE, but as soon as players join a faction they’ll be able to enter PvP combat.

This is a very exciting game that offers some fast-paced combat, a few likeable characters, a character creation system capable of creating extremely diverse and detailed avatars, collectable outfits, and an astonishing artistic style that makes Blade and Soul look different from any other MMORPG out there. An exciting addition to the action MMORPG genre.

BLACK DESERT ONLINE

Black Desert Online is a free-to-play fantasy MMORPG with amazing graphics and a large scale sandbox world to explore. The first game from the Pearl Abyss studio (founded by by the original producer of Continent of the Ninth) includes a variety of features, from spectacular horse riding (including horse-drifting, a feature inspired by Red Dead Redemption) and combat to strategy-oriented castle sieges, trading, the option to buy any house in the cities and more. There’s even a parkour element to the character movement, much in the way we’ve seen in Assassin’s Creed.

Explore some magnificent landscapes and architectures with some of the most breathtakingly realistic characters with different abilities, from Fighters to Sorcerers, Beasts and Tamers. There’s optional PvP and bind-on-equip items that don’t drop if you’re killed by another player.

You’ll be able to buy any property in the cities and even transform it into a shop or crafting area and even create furniture to store your treasure. In the open world the only option is to make a temporary tent. Black Desert Online is a beautiful MMORPG that has an incredible depth to it.
